Accelerated Resolution Therapy
What is A.R.T.? Accelerated Resolution Therapy uses eye movements to process trauma symptoms, difficult sensations, and tough habits you want to break. It’s a cousin of EMDR and also uses images/sensations and bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements. It is NOT hypnosis! Many who have tried both A.R.T. and EMDR report finding A.R.T. to be a gentler and faster treatment. I enjoy using A.R.T. because it taps into the body’s natural strengths and capacity for healing and can often feel playful or creative. I have experienced it myself as part of training and even helped a colleague ditch lifelong arachnophobia in one session at our first training.
Can I blend A.R.T. with talk therapy? Yep, but not in the same session! Some client see me only for A.R.T., but many switch between periods of A.R.T. with periods of talk therapy. On the days we do A.R.T., it will take the whole session.
Can I keep my other therapist? Yes! People often come see me temporarily, or at the same time they’re seeing another therapist. This is especially true for single incident traumas (i.e. car accident, dog bite, etc.), but can also help if you’re feeling stuck just talking.
What if I don’t remember my trauma very well? That’s okay! I can work with that. Trauma often makes it difficult to access specific details, but your body remembers and we can work from that perspective.
Note: I generally require that we do the first session of A.R.T. in person at my office, but we can often move to telehealth after that.
